A Vet's Poem to His Children

They will tell you
this is the last war
the war to end all wars
Don't believe them
war only brings war
they will tell you that it is your duty
to protect democracy
but democracy doesn't live here anymore
she left with the buffalo
afraid of being burned
like witches at the stake
chased away for prophecizing eternal life
they will say they were ordained by god
don't believe them
they only think they're gods
their sons have not seen war-
nor the chicken hawks
who vote to send my sons away
to kill some one they never met
that looks like you or me
and was also sent to kill
like chess pieces on a board
they will bribe you
w/ student loans on the GI Bill
and Veterans mortgages
but there is no bribe
to pay for contamination from spent uranium
or agent orange
or yr missing leg
they didn't tell you
war is not a video game
someone really has to die
the next body bags
could contain the remains
of americans on this soil
fragmentations of realities
they didn't tell you
that your life is expendable
easily traded so
the privileged can drive SUV's
while half the planet has no shoes
how many lives per gallon will it take
to fill you up
release the pump
don't let the blood
overflow!!!
